A Discussion about the Sabbath
1One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his disciples broke off heads of grain, rubbed off the husks in their hands, and ate the grain. 2But some Pharisees said, “Why are you breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?”
3Jesus replied, “Haven’t you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4He went into the house of God and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests can eat. He also gave some to his companions.” 5And Jesus added, “The Son of Mana is Lord, even over the Sabbath.”
Jesus sure was a rule breaker! But then again this builds on exactly what we learned in the last lesson. The New Covenant that Jesus came to create with us is not about rules. It’s not about following a formula and us doing the right thing or the wrong thing. It’s about us doing the Jesus thing.
Disobeying the Sabbath was no small thing in Jesus’s time. The Sabbath and circumcision were the two things that separated the Jews from the rest of the world. Or so they thought. But that’s not what God wants. God wants us to be different from the rest of the world because we are truly a new creation made completely different because our hearts have changed. Our hearts have become Jesus’ heart.
So in this short little lesson we learn what it’s really all about. It’s all about Jesus. So as you walk through your day and I walk through mine let’s try to continually ask one major question. “Jesus what do you want me to do now?” And pray one simple prayer, “Thy will be done.”
Actually that’s kind of scary but in an adventurous type of way. We can do this because God will do it with us and within us.
Lord give me the courage to pray the prayer, “Thy I will be done” and to ask the question “What do you want me to do right now.”
