Hi, i was just nearly finished replying to your yahoo answers question “Why isn’t Christianity logical? Why is Atheism logical?” before yahoo deleted it. Since i took all the time to write my response i figured id copy paste it here 🙂
Speaking as an ex-Christian I can give you the ‘logical’ reasons that led me to leave it. Hopefully are as challenging to you as they were for me 🙂
1. The sameness of Christianity to other religions. Christians believes that their religion is the true one for the exact same reasons that other religious people (Muslims, Hindu’s etc) believe in theirs.
e.g. Muslims and Christians both think they talk to god, Hindus, Muslims and Christians all believe their prayers are answered by their gods and have many miracle stories that float around the religious communities involving experiences with their gods or amazing prayers being directly answered, or they all believe its true because “they can feel it/him in their heart”.
Each religion has lots of propaganda that they hear about the other religions and are brainwashed that they are different and/or evil.
2. Scientific evidence (Might wanna skip this one if it doesn’t interest you, i got carried away :P)
The fossils demonstrating human evolution from primates which matches up perfectly with carbon dating and the geographical distribution.
I refused to believe this at first somehow despite hard evidence and looked as hard as i can for a good counter argument. Never found a good counter argument that gives any kind of rational explanation for the fossils, all i could find were arguments attacking minor unimportant components of evolution like bio genesis or… OK thats the only half decent argument i ever found.
Also the junk DNA evidence
Big bang theory and the fact that galaxies formed themselves is all proven by using telescopes to look at the universe as it was billions of years ago (takes the light billions of years to get to earth from distant places in the universe so we can effectively look back in time).
This also contradicts the bibles approx 6000 year old universe history given through genealogies.
The great flood is impossible on soooo many levels. Too many animals and subspecies to carry on a boat, the fossil record completely contradicts it.
3. Horrible bible verses and contradictions.
e.g. Moses telling his army to kill defenseless women and male babies and children and keep little girls “for themselves”
“Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known a man intimately. 18 But keep alive for yourselves all the young girls who have not known a man intimately.” – King James bible
Cant be bothered finding all the contradictions between the books of the bible, but there are many e.g. 2 of the gospels disagreeing on who Josephs father was.
I’d love to hear your response if you have time, or if you think I have any flaws in my logic or if theres more to this than just logic 🙂
Iv’e by no means made my mind up about all this stuff, still on the journey.
P.S. I like the concept of some your blog, although most of it seems directed at Christians ill be interested to see what you add to pages like “Logically Christian” so ill be back 🙂
Thanks for the comment. It is the first one really asking what I’m looking for. I will have to do some pondering and investigation before I respond. You point out many areas I need to work through so this will take some time and probably be in several posts. I do wish however you had responded with the same level of respect I had asked the question with.
