Beginner's Online Bible Study: Promise Of The Holy Spirit – John 14:15-21

Thomas Less, December 7, 2011

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15“If you love me, obey my commandments.16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another gAdvocate, who will never leave you.17He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.18No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you.19Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you also will live.20When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.21Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.”

This promise of the Holy Spirit is so huge we can never really comprehend it.  Read the paragraph again.  Jesus says he is in the Father, we are in Him and He is in us!  The relationship between us and Jesus appears to be on the same level as the relationship between Jesus and the Father, and they are ONE!  I am not a theologian, and perhaps I’m reading too much into it, but there certainly is not a distancing of distinguishing of the relationship.  It appears that through the in-dwelling of the Holy Spirit we become truly one with God in ways beyond our wildest imagination.

Often in the Bible God compares his relationship with us to marriage.  Now that science has revealed how DNA works, this is even more meaningful.  When two people bring a child into the world, the DNA of the parents is combined and embedded in every single cell in the child’s body.  You cannot possibly separate the parents DNA out of the child.  I think that is a great example of the unity God will have with us in heaven.  Actually, the scripture above makes it sound like that is exactly what we have right now!

Holy Spirit, open my eyes and heart to the fullness of the relationship you long to have with me and help me to embrace You completely and totally into my life.  *obbs*
