Jesus Sends Out His Disciples
1The Lord now chose seventy-twoa other disciples and sent them ahead in pairs to all the towns and places he planned to visit. 2These were his instructions to them: “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields. 3Now go, and remember that I am sending you out as lambs among wolves. 4Don’t take any money with you, nor a traveler’s bag, nor an extra pair of sandals. And don’t stop to greet anyone on the road.
I imagine I am one of those 72 and Jesus is sending me out ahead of him. I’ll take the liberty of paraphrasing Jesus’ words into what I hear in my life today: “The places you will go in the next few days are full of people who are just waiting to know me better. Pray to the Father to send more and more evangelist to help you. No get out there and loves these people. You are to be kind, and gentle, and innocent even if everyone around you isn’t. Not only that, but many will want to tear you to pieces, but you are still to be loving, kind, gentle and innocent. Not only that, but you don’t need to be hoarding money and stuff for yourself, I’ll take care of that. You are on a mission and you are not to turn from the right, or the left, or stop to go shopping, or make some extra money or even to visit except for a visit that is really about bringing people the message of how close I am.”
I’m not going to lie, when I hear Jesus saying that to me, it’s scary.
Holy Spirit, give me the courage (that word seems to be a theme nowadays) to complete the mission you have set before me.
