Beginner's Online Bible Study: The Work Of The Holy Spirit – John 16:5-15

Thomas Less, December 16, 2011
The Work of the Holy Spirit

5“But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going.6Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you.7But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the eAdvocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you.8And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.9The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me.10Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more.11Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.

12“There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now.13When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.14He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me.15All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’

The Holy Spirit is sent to “convict the world of its sine, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.”  I don’t know about you but that is exactly what he did to me to bring me to Jesus, and that is still what he does today when I sin.  Notice that it is the Holy Spirit that does the convicting, not us!  We are not going to bring people to Jesus by telling them all their sins.  Conviction of the heart can only be done by God.  We need to show and tell people that there is another way, a wonderful way.

Jesus also promises that the Holy Spirit will guide us.    It is a promise and it is real.  We need to pray for the wisdom and listen and to act.  We so often go through our day making decisions and taking actions with no thought of God at all.  We need to stop, pray, and listen a lot more often (or at least I do).  If you hired a guide to lead you hiking through a dangerous mountain range, you would follow the guide.  We have God himself as our guide and ignore him over and over and over.

Jesus, help me to show your love and kindness to those who need you so bad and also help me to remember to pray and listen over and over and over as I go through my hectic days.  *obbs*
