Beginner's Online Bible Study: Matthew 1: 1-17 – The Geneology of Jesus through Joseph

Thomas Less, 12/23/2010

The Ancestors of Jesus the Messiah
1This is a record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, a descendant of Davida and of Abraham:
2Abraham was the father of Isaac.
Isaac was the father of Jacob.
Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers.
3Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah (whose mother was Tamar).
Perez was the father of Hezron.
Hezron was the …

If God is all-knowing, and God doesn't change his mind, why pray?

Thomas Less, 12/03/2010

Questions: Shouldn’t prayer be useless? Imagine you are a young teenager and your mom is sick in the hospital with cancer and almost about to die. You pray to god that she be healed and make a full recovery, but this is pointless for two reasons that go very well together. 1) God is all-knowing and has a perfect plan for you and he is never-changing (Number 23:19). God, being …

I won’t believe in something I can’t understand. “Just have faith” just won’t work for me.

Thomas Less, 11/26/2010

You said you were tired of people telling you to just have faith. I agreed that too often people say that as opposed to studying, thinking and investigating. However, feeling like you need to understand everything is also not a good idea for 1 reasons.

First, the need to understand everything keeps you from progressing. I’ll use this line and points as an example.

2 Corinthians 9: 1-5

Thomas Less, 11/26/2010

1There is no need for me to write to you about this service to the saints. 2For I know your eagerness to help, and I have been boasting about it to the Macedonians, telling them that since last year you in Achaia were ready to give; and your enthusiasm has stirred most of them to action. 3But I am sending the brothers in order that our boasting …

Why would anyone be attracted to Christianity?

Thomas Less, 11/25/2010

If you are looking at which religion show the most increase in adherents, Christianity is the fastest growing religion in the world.  To ask why, is very reasonable.  It doesn’t really fit into my discussion here, but I like the answer so well I am posting it anyway.

I think the best answer for this was written by Dinesh d’Souza in a book call “What’s So Great About Christianity” and …

2 Corinthians 8: 22-24

Thomas Less, 11/25/2010

22In addition, we are sending with them our brother who has often proved to us in many ways that he is zealous, and now even more so because of his great confidence in you. 23As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker among you; as for our brothers, they are representatives of the churches and an honor to Christ. 24Therefore show these men the proof …

2 Corinthians 8: 19-21

Thomas Less, 11/23/2010

19What is more, he was chosen by the churches to accompany us as we carry the offering, which we administer in order to honor the Lord himself and to show our eagerness to help. 20We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer this liberal gift. 21For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but …

2 Corinthians 8: 16-19

Thomas Less, 11/22/2010

16But thank God! He has given Titus the same enthusiasm for you that I have. 17Titus welcomed our request that he visit you again. In fact, he himself was very eager to go and see you. 18We are also sending another brother with Titus. All the churches praise him as a preacher of the Good News. 19He was appointed by the churches to accompany us as …

How can God justify punishing Adam and Eve for eating from the "Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil", when before they ate from it they didn't understand good and evil?

Thomas Less, 11/20/2010

This was a very interesting question I had never been presented with before, and at first I found it very perplexing.  But after consideration and prayer, it actually lead me to greater faith.

First, we need to clarify that someone can do wrong without necessarily understanding why what they did was wrong.  For example, if you tell a child not to throw stones, and they throw a stone, they have …

2 Corinthians 8: 10-15

Thomas Less, 11/19/2010

10Here is my advice: It would be good for you to finish what you started a year ago. Last year you were the first who wanted to give, and you were the first to begin doing it. 11Now you should finish what you started. Let the eagerness you showed in the beginning be matched now by your giving.

Lord, I need this to apply to me in more …
