Beginners Bible Study: Matthew 5:13-16 You are the salt of the earth

Thomas Less, January 14, 2011
13“You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.
14“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.15No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.16In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly kFather.

What is salt used for?  It adds flavor and zest to food.  It makes the bland exciting.  The city on the hill and the lamp on the lamp stand, they both help people find their way.  So what is Jesus saying to us?  Make a difference.  It really is that simple.  Salt is not a big thing that gets lots of attention.  It is just a simple thing that day in and day out makes our lives better.  We take lights for granted don’t we?  I think Jesus wants us to be like that.  Day after day after day we just let His love flow through us and we make a difference in the world around us. Lord, help me to do the little acts of kindness that makes other’s lives a little better.  Help me to never pass up a chance to show your love.  And may all the glory go to you Lord.

Have you ever noticed how when it is REALLY dark, even just one small light like a candle or lamp or flashlight can make a BIG difference in the world around you? Lord, let me be the kind of light that makes it easier for people to see your great light…let me reflect your love to EVERYONE in my life!

John 8:12….”Jesus said to the people, “I am the Light of the world. So if you follow me, you won’t be stumbling through the darkness, for living light will flood your path.”

We need to allow our light to shine for others and we also need to be aware of the path that our Lord has illuminated for us – to trust in His ways and not be afraid to do what is asked of us.

Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the world’s light – a city on a hill, glowing in the night for all to see. Don’t hide your light! Let it shine for all; let your good deeds glow for all to see, so that they will praise your heavenly Father!”
