Beginner's Online Bible Study: Matthew 6: 1-4 Do your good deeds in private

Thomas Less, January 22, 2011
1“Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven.2When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the ehypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get.3But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.4Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.

I can do something to give me glory, or I can do something to give God glory, but I can’t do both.  I know I need to guard against this sometimes.  It is so easy to want the spotlight.  I’m actually accused of wanting the spotlight just for having this website.  It is a tricky thing sometimes.  But the longer I walk with Jesus, the more natural this becomes,  to want to help and want to give, but not want anyone to know.  It is actually very freeing when you stop caring about credit and blame.  My private prayer journal has a quote on the first page that seems right here:

Francis Frangipane, “To inoculate me from the praise of man, God baptized me in the criticism of man, until I died to the control of man.”

Beginner’s Online Bible Study *obbs* to steal Your glory from You.  I know that is what it really is.  Remind me of my sin, crush me with criticism of others, whatever it takes, but change me so that everything I do, I do for Your glory because it is what You want. desireLord, do whatever it takes to rid me of any

Sometimes there is a fine line between sharing God’s love with others and looking like you are claiming the spotlight. I think about that because a big part of my job is dealing with the publicity of a Catholic School…..we are all about God, but people often comment on how they have seen ME in the paper or heard ME on the radio….I want them to see God through me….and God is SO present in his family!! But, if we don’t share that with the public, many people will not have the opportunity to learn about this precious gift that exists. But God knows our intentions, too, and he blesses what is good!! God is SOOO good!
