Beginner's Online Bible Study: Mattew 9:35 – 10-4 Jesus chooses the 12 apostles

Thomas Less, 02/18/2011
35Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages of that area, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness.36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a dshepherd.37He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few.38So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.”

1Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them authority to cast out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness.2Here are the names of the twelve eapostles:

first, Simon (also called Peter),
then Andrew (Peter’s brother),
James (son of Zebedee),
John (James’s brother),
3Philip,
Bartholomew,
Thomas,
Matthew (the tax collector),
James (son of Alphaeus),
Thaddaeus,
4Simon (the zealot),
Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed him).

First we have the problem, and then God’s solution.  Jesus is preaching and healing and the crowds are growing and growing.  He looks about and sees their confusion and their need, and turns to prayer.  Another gospel says Jesus went away by himself and prayed all night before choosing the 12 apostles.  Finally, he chooses 12 of the most unlikely people you could possibly imagine to change the entire world for all of history.  There is not an educated person among them.  The only one who may have been wealthy was Matthew, and he would have gotten wealthy from cheating and betraying his own people.  They were a totally disrespected and unimpressive group.

We too should look at the people around us and see they are still full of confusion and need.  Like Jesus, we should not look down on them, but see them with loving compassion.  Then we are to turn to God in prayer.  If Jesus prayed, shouldn’t we?  God is the solution to every problem in our lives and the lives of those around us.  Turn to Him with every question and need.  Every time we fail to turn to God first, we are making a mistake.

Lastly, we must know that we to are chosen and God can use us.  God changed the world through a bunch of misfits.  When God crushes you and empties you, it is so when he uses you it is obviously to you and everyone who know you that it was his power, not your own.  Don’t be afraid to let God use you, especially if you feel you have nothing for Him to use.  Beginner’s Online Bible Study *obbs*

21At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. 22“All…

Luke 10: 17-20 Love is more powerful than power

17The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” 18He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm…

Luke 10: 8-16 We’re just the messengers

05/04/2017

8“If you enter a town and it welcomes you, eat whatever is set before you. 9Heal the sick, and tell them, ‘The Kingdom of God is near you now.’ 10But if a town refuses to welcome you, go out into its streets and say, 11‘We wipe even the dust of…

Worry is such a drain on my life. I find something to worry about every day and then i try to stay as busy as possible to keep my mind off the newest worry. I want to be able to relax, to enjoy the day, seize the moment, bask in the sunshine of each days blessings. Not to hide in darkness and to be afraid to turn the corner for fear of what its hidden. It is such a strange paradox – that I fear the hear and now, but I also fear the future and worry about the past. Attempting to be perfect – I always have something I wish that I could “do over”. God created me in His image – I am a child of the most High, a King. I am a princess, a daughter of the king! Why then can I not accept what God has given me – to look at all the blessings and to learn from my trials. To believe with faith that God has a plan for my life and each thing that I survive and each obstacle I overcome is preparing me for what He has planned for my future. After reading your comments above I realize that God can use each and every one of us. He in not looking for perfection, rather He is looking for a willing heart to follow him – I am yours Lord, use me for your glory

I would just like to add that there is nothing in life that will bring you more joy and peace than letting God use you!! The more I let God have control of my life for His use and meet other people who have done the same, the more I find some of the happiest people in the world!
