45“Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls.46When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it!
These can be scary verses, or they can be inspiring, but they certaining teach a lot in a few words. First, in both cases, the person is searching, or at least lookout. They weren’t going through life unaware of their surroundings or what was happening around them. We all know we can do that. We can live our lives on cruise control, but we won’t discover anything that way. We need to be searching.
We also need to recognize that the Kingdom of God is a rare treasure that is missed by most. Clearly it is special and when these searchers came upon it, they knew they had found something special when others had ignored it. The first treasure was in a field. Fields at the time were worked by hand laborers. How many others had worked right over the treasure and missed it? The pearl seems to be at a merchants place for he bought it from someone. Surely other people had seen it but not recognized its worth. In our every day lives, where we work and where we shop, are we looking for the Kingdom of God? Or are we missing treasures?
And lastly, do we value the Kingdom of God as these men did? Both of them “sold everything” to get the treasure. I don’t think at this point I have yet sold everything. Does everything I have in the world mean nothing to me compared to the Kingdom of God. I would like to say yes, but I will not know till God asks it of me. And these men didn’t sell what they had in fear. They were excited about what they did!
