1In the beginning the aWord already existed.
The aWord was with God,
and the aWord was God.
2He existed in the beginning with God.
3God created everything through him,
and nothing was created except through him.
4The Word gave life to everything that was created,
and his life brought light to everyone.
5The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it.
John’s gospel starts very similar to how the entire Bible starts in Genesis: “In the beginning”. Obviously John is talking about Jesus here. Jesus was always with God, and Jesus was always God. Jesus is the Word and the Light. Through Jesus everything was created. Jesus gave life to everything.
It is hard to grasp how much is being said here. Imagine a world without light and you are imagining a life without Jesus. In total darkness we may think we know what things are and look like, but we are likely not even close. So it is with a life without Jesus. We may think we are living, but we don’t have a clue what we are missing. We are just stumbling around in the dark. Jesus is also the Word. True knowledge and wisdom and communication are all wrapped up in Him. The Bible is Him and He is the Bible. Jesus is the source of true life. We are only truly alive when we are united with Him and without Him, we have no life.
Read this passage again and again. I doubt any of us can ever grasp what this truly means.
Lord, open my mind and heart to how completely You can fill my life. Open my eyes to Your true Light and my ears to Your Word. Change me Lord, change me. *obbs*
