A Stone In The Shoe

Something you can't forget about

Luke 10:21-24 Like a child

Thomas Less, May 17, 2017

21At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

22“All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

23Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. 24For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”

We live in a world where education and science and knowledge and skills are so intensely prized, and in some ways, rightly so. But read what Jesus is saying:

  • “All things have been committed to me by my Father…” – What could be more important than knowing the Father and Jesus? Here we are told “all things” are known by them. This is common sense. Just look into the vastness of the sky at night. Science doesn’t know 1% of what there is to know.
  • “because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned” – He is telling us that the smarter we think we are, the less likely God is to reveal things to us. Again, that is common sense. People who think they are smart quickly become close minded to ideas that conflict with their own. They stop listening to the thoughts of those less educated than themselves.
  • ” revealed them to little children.” – Children are curious and instinctively believe their parents. Who do you see as your ultimate “parent”? Are you curiously listen and instinctively believing?

I’m not saying science and education are bad. I’m also not saying they are even in conflict with God and his word, they are not and most of the reasons people think they are in conflict come from either historical myths or ignorance of Christianity. (See here for video series)  What I’m saying is the really important knowledge is knowing God and we have to come down from our ivory towers to know him.

Holy Spirit, give me the courage and burning desire to humbly listen to your words and walk with you through the garden of life listening to your true wisdom about the things that are really important.
