4Peter exclaimed, “Lord, it’s wonderful for us to be here! If you want, I’ll make three shelters as memorials—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
5But even as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy. Listen to him.”
6The disciples were terrified and fell face down on the ground.7Then Jesus came over and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.”8And when they looked up, Moses and Elijah were gone, and they saw only Jesus.
9As they went back down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
Jesus’ true glory is somehow kept hidden inside his human body and on this occasion it comes pouring out. Where was before and how could be kept hidden? It of course was always there. Jesus didn’t become the Son of God at this moment, he was conceived by God. Perhaps it even always shone, but the three disciples simply had their eyes opened to it. I don’t know.
But here is the point: We are now children of God through faith. We are transformed. Jesus is literally in our bodies. We can’t see it or grasp it or understand it, but that shining pure body is there within us too. That life from heaven, unstained. God is waiting to tell us too we are His children and through our faith in Jesus we bring him great joy.
Oh Father, I know I don’t deserve it, but give me the faith to believe that Your Holy Spirit truly is alive in me and that there is a pure and amazing life, your life, that will someday shine through this earthly shell of my own. To live in a reality that can see your glory in everyone around me and to meet with the great saints and prophets of the past all sharing in Your light and Your glory and Your life through Jesus – that would be heavenly.
